HomeTHE GREENHOUSE YEAR

September in the greenhouse

Ripe tomatoes, fresh autumn leaves and a little preparation for cooler nights: September is a changeover, not the end of the season.

UK seasonal guidance · Reviewed September 2026

Start with your conditions. Dates are a guide. Northern and exposed gardens can be several weeks behind sheltered southern ones. A greenhouse without heat does not guarantee frost protection.
01

Sow

Sow winter lettuce, rocket, spinach and suitable oriental leaves. Use small batches and choose varieties labelled for autumn sowing.

02

Grow

Plant out established salad modules as summer crops finish. Check tender plants before bringing them inside, and keep them separate if pests are present.

03

Harvest

Pick ripe tomatoes, cucumbers and peppers regularly. Harvest healthy basil before cold nights, and use or preserve any surplus.

04

Jobs this month

Water earlier in the day, ventilate on mild days and gradually remove shading as light falls. Clean empty spaces and check your minimum thermometer.

Make your own growing notes

Record what you sowed, your overnight minimum temperature and how the plants responded. Check the compost below the surface before watering: the same calendar date can bring very different conditions from one year to the next. Use the seed packet’s variety-specific guidance alongside this monthly plan.

For tender crops, distinguish the warmth needed for germination from the conditions needed after seedlings emerge. For winter leaves, choose varieties intended for the season and allow for slower growth as daylight falls.
