TROPICAL & WARM GREENHOUSE PLANTS

A tropical greenhouse needs more than a heater.

True tropical plants need dependable winter warmth, but they also need enough light, controlled humidity, fresh air and careful watering. Buy only after checking the coldest conditions you can maintain.

Match the plant to the minimum—not the daytime maximum

Sunny winter days can make a greenhouse feel warm while nights remain damagingly cold. Use a reliable sensor and choose plants by their stated minimum temperature. Moth orchids, for example, need consistently warm conditions and bright light without strong direct sun.

Humidity and airflow work together

Many tropical plants dislike dry air, but sealed high humidity encourages fungal and bacterial problems. Group plants thoughtfully, use trays or humidification where appropriate and maintain gentle air movement without cold draughts.

Winter light limits growth

Warmth without adequate light can produce weak growth. Reduce watering and feeding when growth slows unless supplementary lighting and temperature are being managed as a complete system.

Possible greenhouse groups

Orchids, bromeliads, begonias, gingers, bananas and tropical foliage plants can all be rewarding, but “tropical” is not one care category. Research each species and cultivar before combining them.
