GREENHOUSE FLOWERS

Use shelter to raise stronger flowers and extend the season.

A greenhouse can raise young plants, protect tender favourites, produce earlier blooms and keep cut-flower seedlings away from the worst weather.

Flowers for an unheated greenhouse

Hardy annuals such as sweet peas, cornflowers and calendula can be raised under protection, while tender bedding plants should wait for suitable warmth. Dahlias and chrysanthemums can be started or protected, but frost risk must be managed.

Flowers for frost-protected or cool conditions

Pelargoniums, fuchsias and many tender perennials can be overwintered if their minimum temperature and watering needs are met. Keep compost on the appropriate side of dry during low-light periods without allowing roots to desiccate.

Hygiene around flowers

Deadhead, remove fallen petals and space pots so air reaches leaves. Botrytis often begins in dying tissue when humidity stays high. Water early enough for foliage and surfaces to dry before night.
