GREENHOUSE VEGETABLES & HERBS

Plan crops around light, temperature and space.

A greenhouse is most useful when crops follow one another. Quick salads can use the space before summer fruiting plants take over, then cool-season leaves can return in autumn.

A simple three-season plan

Early

Lettuce, radish, spinach, spring onions, peas and hardy herbs make use of cool conditions.

Main season

Tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, aubergines and basil take over once temperatures and light rise.

Late

Clear exhausted plants, refresh the surface and establish winter salads before light levels collapse.

Do not sow warmth-loving plants too early

Seeds may germinate indoors but seedlings become weak if moved into cold, dim conditions. Work back from the date when your greenhouse can provide suitable nights, or keep young plants under dependable light and warmth until conditions improve.

Use the vertical space

Train cordon tomatoes, cucumbers and climbing beans on strong supports fixed before plants become heavy. Keep lower air movement in mind and avoid a solid wall of foliage.
